February Themed Challenge

Our theme for the February challenge over at the Art Elements Blog was chosen by our amazingly talented Cathy Spivey Mendola and was Birds of Prey.
My initial thought was wow there are so many things I want to do..... I once had a very vivid and strangely calming dream of an eagle flying over a mountain and I wanted to do something to do with that, I also used this theme as an excuse to buy an owl bead from Kerri Fuhr which I was going to wire wrap onto a hair pin but never did get round to either.
I do how ever have a work in progress....

Imagine if you would a couple of copper sawn ivy leaves with twisting copper branches winding up the wooden post and a little copper plate stamped with something owl themed. I wanted the owl to be really grungy looking with lots of texture but I don't think I managed to achieve the look I wanted and now I want to see what he would look like made from bronze clay or copper clay with a beautiful green patina !!!!

I also fell in love with a tutorial from
Ursula Jewellery for a beautiful wire wrapped owl pendent, that did not come out exactly as it should have but I still love it....

Thank you Cathy for a wonderfully enjoyable theme and I am really looking forward to seeing what everyone else has created!

  2. I just love your little owl sitting on the tree stump. I can imagine ivy crawling up the post but I actually love him just the way he is! And your wire wrapped owl is also stunning.

  3. This is adorable and definitely squeeworthy! I'm sure it's still a very young owl from the look on his face, innocent and maybe just a little bit at a loss what to do next.

  4. They're both fantatsic Niky. I can just imagine winding ivy around the first piece, he's going to look even more amazing when finished and your wire wrapping is perfect. I love the green on his wing.

  5. I always love seeing what you create for these challenges. I hate that your first owl isn't as you imagined, as I think he's magnificent! But, if you see something else he could be, trust your instinct! And, the wire worked owl is so beautiful. I'm always in awe of intricate wire wrapped pieces. You nailed it as far as I'm concerned!

  6. So cute Niky! I love the little owl on the post, even though he's not too grungy. Maybe he's the cautious one from his clutch? All the siblings are probably hopping though the brambles getting all ruffled up.

  8. Niky, anything with Copper gets my attention! And I'm sure your owl will take on a grungy look paired with the ideas you have for it. I can't wait to see the finished piece. Alysen

  9. The tiny wee owl already looks wonderful and yes, I can imagine the post being overgrown! I love him already as he is now but I believe he will be really stunning when you are finished! Also... if you don't have enough space anymore, he can always come and live with me ;)

  11. That's a really adorable owl you've made, Niky! I like him as he is, but I can also imagine the ivy contributing to the piece. As for the wire pendant, I love it - the wrapping and all those curves look gorgeous!

  12. Both of your owls are adorable! I love the one on the tree branch - and I can see leaves winding up the branch.
I love the wire work of your piece - I love seeing what people can create with wire.

  13. The owl in progress is adorable. And I had to laugh that you found it wasn't as grungy as you wanted because I felt my first piece ended up more grungy than I wanted. The wired owl is amazing. Your wraps are so tidy and the swirls over the cab have beautiful loose flow.

  14. I really love that owl in progress. He has quite a bit of character just as he/she is. And wow - that wirework is awesome! I know that kind of wrapping and detail you get is rough on your fingers - you did beautifully! :)
